Background


Directorate General, Livestock Extension & Research (DG LER), Sindh is the premier technical arm of the Livestock & Fisheries Department, entrusted with advancing sustainable livestock development through evidence-based research, technology generation, and effective extension services. It provides strategic leadership in enhancing livestock productivity, genetic improvement, animal health, and farmers' livelihoods by bridging scientific innovation with field-level application. The Directorate also supports provincial policy implementation, institutional capacity building, and technology dissemination to strengthen the livestock sector's contribution to food security and economic growth.

A.    Central Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratories

Provide accurate and timely disease diagnostics.

Ensure animal health through advanced diagnostic services.

Operate state-of-the-art laboratories for disease detection and control.

B.    Vaccine Production & Quality Control Units

Produce and ensure the quality of veterinary vaccines.

Safeguard animal health through effective vaccination programs.

Develop, produce, and distribute high-quality vaccines across the province.

CORE FUNCTIONS

EXTENSION
  • Facilitate the transfer and adoption of improved livestock technologies and best management practices.
  • Deliver advisory and capacity-building services on animal production, health, breeding, nutrition, and climate-resilient livestock management.
  • Strengthen farmer outreach through training, demonstrations, awareness campaigns, and stakeholder engagement.
  • Promote productivity enhancement, biosecurity, disease prevention, and sustainable livestock production systems.
RESEARCH
  • Conduct demand-driven applied and adaptive research to address sectoral challenges.
  • Develop and validate technologies for genetic improvement, nutrition, reproduction, animal health, and production systems.
  • Conserve and improve indigenous livestock genetic resources.
  • Generate scientific evidence to inform policy, planning, and sustainable livestock development.
  • Foster collaboration with national and international research institutions for innovation, technology transfer, and knowledge exchange.
