Introduction

Sindh possesses one of Pakistan's richest fisheries resources. It has the country's largest freshwater lakes and a 270 km coastline across Thatta, Sujawal, and Badin districts, extending over nearly 200 nautical miles with abundant high-value exportable fish and crustacean species.

The inland fisheries sector has experienced increasing pressure due to overfishing, destructive fishing practices, pollution, and environmental changes. Consequently, the Fisheries Department is committed to conserving, rehabilitating, and sustainably managing both inland and marine fisheries resources.

The Department continues to enhance fish production through hatchery development, conservation initiatives, aquaculture promotion, and technical assistance to fish farmers. Public hatcheries are operational in Thatta, Sukkur, Larkana, Jamshoro, Naushahro Feroze, Sanghar, Shikarpur and Badin, while four backyard hatcheries have been established under the Accelerated Action Plan for Reduction of Stunting and Malnutrition in Sindh.

The Department continues enforcement and legal action to protect fisheries resources and support the sustainable management of inland and marine fisheries.
