Introduction

Sindh holds premier position in Fisheries Resources of Pakistan. The largest lakes of Pakistan of fresh water are located in Sindh. 270 km Coastal belt at the districts Thatta, Sujawal and Badin, spread over about 200 Nautical miles rich in high value exportable fish and crustacean species.

Sindh Inland fisheries resources have come under increasing pressure from over fishing, use of destructive fishing gear/methodologies, pollution, environment changes and have shown a clear declining trend. Hence, the department is working to rehabilitate, conserve and manage the public water bodies (Inland and Marine).

Presently the Sindh Fisheries Department is playing a role to compensate the declining fish production and continuing fishing and farming activities. Department intends to meet the demand of public waters and private fish farms. Out of 23 Districts in Sindh, five (0) fish hatcheries are established in nine districts located at Carp Fish Hatchery Chilya Thatta, Upper Sindh Carp Fish Hatchery Mando Dero Sukkur, Carp Fish Dokri Larkana, Carp Fish Bubak, Disease Diagnostic Research and Prawn Hatchery Center Jamshoro, Carp Fish Hatchery Noshero Feroze, Carp Fish Sanghar, Carp Fish Shikarpur & Carp Fish Badin. Furthermore, the four backyard fish hatcheries were established under Accelerated Action Plan for Reduction of Stunting and Malnutrition in Sindh (Fisheries Sector), Karachi namely, Backyard Fish Hatchery at Chilya Thatta, Backyard Fish Hatchery Jhampir @ Keenjhar, Backyard Fish Hatchery at Sanghar, Backyard Fish Hatchery at Mando Dero Sukkur.

 

EFFORTS TO MEET THE NEW FISH BREEDING TARGETS:

Fish seed production of different varieties of indigenous carp fishes from July 2024 up to February 20th 2025 is 448 million from all public carp fish hatcheries of Sindh.

 

FISHING LICENSE PROGRESS:

Fishing license provides legal way to fishermen for fishing from the public water areas in order to sustainable livelihood as per following categories.

EXTENSION SERVICES

Extension services regarding how to utilize the water-logged area in to the potential fish farms throughout the province, in result 31 private Fish farms have been established in water logged areas.

131 progressive Fish Farmers are trained in modern Aquaculture technology.

 

CONSERVATIONS OF FISHERIES RESOURCES

61 banned nets have been confiscated as per Sindh Fisheries Ordinance 1980 and challenged in the court of law.

243 cases are compounds under Sindh Fisheries Ordinance & Rules. RS. 272,300/- fine fee has been collected on account of case compounded.
